Calling all cheese lovers!

A delicious venture opened in York today (Friday). The Speakcheesey, from the owners of Love Cheese, will be serving up some tasty delights on Fossgate.

A sister location to the Love Cheese deli and cafe on Gillygate, this expansion will be spreading even more cheesy love to the city.

YorkMix spoke to owner Jordan Thomson to find out more about the new venue.

“It’s an extension of our Love Cheese,” explained Jordan. “It’s all things cheese and everything in-between!”

The location is primarily food-led right now as per the licensing, “but maybe down the line it can be somewhere you can just come for a glass of wine and chill out as well.”

The Speakcheesey is located in what was previously the long-running York deli, café and wine bar Hairy Fig before it shut earlier this year. “It’s a prime street to be on.”

The menu is, as you might expect, full of cheese. Choose from cheese on toast (nduja, rosary goats cheese and Piggys hot honey, £8.95), cheese toasties like the Rueben League (provolone, Irish pastrami, pickles and US mustard, £8.95), or a cheeseboard from the daily selection (from £13.95)

There are also classic light bites like pork pie with chutney (£5), pickled cucumbers (£3), and bread and oil (£4.50).

Soft drinks, wine, and beer are available, with local brands like Brew York stocked.

“As we go down the line, hopefully we’ll bring the Afternoon Cheese over, which is very popular,” said Jordan. “We’ve got the opportunity to experiment with more weird and wonderful stuff.”

The Speakcheesey has 24 covers instead, and the food is also available for takeaway. There is also a deli section, with products like crips, nuts, and pickled onions.

The venue opened today, Friday 11 July, as a soft launch. “We’ve got enough time to make sure everything is working.”

It will be open from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm, with the aim to extend to 8pm in a couple of month’s time.

Future plans for the cafe also include plans to do some Cheese Tastings in the venue too, and there are secondhand books and merch available to buy from upcoming ‘Books and Bevs’ – and idea for a bookshop bar from Joe Long, who works at The Speakcheesey, so watch this space.
