Legendary York band Shed Seven have shared their delight after students at Huntington School performed one of their hit singles during an end-of-year arts concert.

The school showcased the band’s song ‘Disco Down’ at last nights event (Thursday).

The version was especially meaningful for two members of the band, guitarist Paul Banks and vocalist Rick Witter, as it was at Huntington School where they first dreamed of starting a band together.

Both Paul and Rick attended the school, and it was inside that very assembly room where they first witnessed a live band perform at 11 years old.

That moment, Paul says, left them “completely mesmerised”, inspiring them to go on and form Shed Seven.

The band posted the video of the performance on social media this morning (Friday), calling it “magnificent.”

Paul Banks wrote:

“Wow… Huntington School performed this magnificent version of Disco Down at their end-of-year arts concert yesterday.

“What makes this even more special is that it took place in the very assembly room where at age 11, Rick and I first saw a band play and were completely mesmerised. That was the moment we had the idea to form a band ourselves.

“So watching this is genuinely moving. Well done to everyone involved it sounds incredible. You’ve done us proud. PB.”

The post gained over two thousand reactions and hundreds of comments, one of which coming from Paul later that day.

He highlighted the importance of arts education:

“Keep thinking about this today. If that band hadn’t played in the school assembly that day when I was aged 11, I honestly don’t know where I’d be.

“One moment. One performance. A whole world opened up.

“So to see students from our old school perform a song we wrote… in that room… where it all started makes me think this stuff matters. Arts education matters. Giving young people the tools and confidence to create… that really matters.”

Well done to everyone at Huntington School!
