A new school is preparing to open its doors in York after being given the go-ahead by Ofsted.

Inspire Academy in Acomb is an independent special school.

It will teach students aged 11 to 16 from across the city with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and other special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Inspire Academy is part of York-based Excel Learning Trust. It will offer personalised education for up to 40 pupils.

The school’s curriculum is designed to be “ambitious, inclusive, and responsive to individual needs”, preparing students for GCSE qualifications and life beyond school.

It has been officially registered by the Department for Education following a successful pre-registration inspection by Ofsted last month.

Inspectors praised the school’s broad curriculum, robust safeguarding systems, and strong emphasis on pupils’ personal development.

The report said that Inspire Academy is “likely to meet all the independent school standards when it opens”.

Referrals to Inspire Academy will be considered where students meet the following criteria:

  • On roll at an Excel Learning Trust mainstream academy.
  • Require respite to support their place in mainstream provision.
  • At risk of permanent exclusion.

Inspire’s head of school Rickie Wilson said: “Inspire Academy has been developed with care, vision, and commitment to creating a nurturing and ambitious environment for young people who need it most. We’re thrilled to open up this provision to the York community.”

CEO of Excel Learning Trust, Mark Hassack, added: “We are proud to expand our family of schools with Inspire Academy.
