Two fires were started in the same area of York within hours of each other.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said it was called to Alcuin Avenue in Tang Hall twice last night (Friday).

The first call was at 7.49pm. This presumably was to Hull Road Park, as hedge cuttings had been set on fire.

A York crew put it out using a knapsack sprayer and a hose reel jet.

“The cause was deliberate and police have been informed,” a North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said.

Then at 9.40pm, crew from York responded to reports of a fire in the open on Alcuin Avenue.

The spokesperson said: “This was a fire to a traffic cone on a drain cover. The cause was believed deliberate. The police have been informed.”
