Police remain in Naburn following an incident last night which left one man dead and a woman in hospital with serious injuries.

Officers were called to a property on York Road at 5:50pm yesterday (Monday) after reports of an assault. They found a woman with a serious head injury, and shortly afterwards the body of a man was discovered in the village play park.

One Naburn resident told YorkMix they believed the incident to be “a tragic domestic matter between a husband and wife.”

Police tape currently cordons off a house on York Road, with a marked police vehicle stationed outside the property.

During the incident, a beige whippet escaped from the house. According to reports on Facebook, the dog has since been found.

This morning, residents were seen patrolling the village in an effort to locate the missing dog. One local told YorkMix:

“We’re all shocked here in Naburn this morning, we’re out looking for the dog, because the lady’s in hospital and she’s asking for her.”

Another local, from Bishopthorpe and a regular dog walker in Naburn, described the events as “highly unsettling”:

“Such a tragic accident to happen in beautiful Naburn, we walk our dogs here and would never in a million years expect something so upsetting to happen here. Our thoughts go out to those affected.”

The play park, located behind the Village Hall on Vicarage Lane, has now reopened after the discovery of a body there last night.

A woman who was in the park told YorkMix, “it’s awful, everyone is really upset.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson stated that an investigation is ongoing into both incidents, and urged residents not to worry.

“We realise the events in Naburn will have caused shock and concern in the village. However, officers believe that the wider community were not at risk and that both parties involved in the incident knew each other.”
