Hands up who can spare some time?
Could you be a trustee? One in five charities, including charities in York, has one or more vacancy on its board.

For Trustees’ Week 2014 (November 9-15), York CVS is encouraging people to volunteer as a trustee with a local charity.

You could join an army of one million trustees in Britain, essential to keep charities running.

Organisations in York looking for trustees include:

  • RSPCA York and District Branch
  • Martin House Children’s Hospice
  • Haxby Memorial Hall
  • York Family Mediation Service.
  •
In addition, York CVS is recruiting a chair for its board.

“We are looking for someone with passion, expertise and inspiration,” said Rosy Tebbutt, head of operations for York CVS.

“Trustees play a vital role and have helped York CVS succeed for the past 75 years. Our new chair will help our board provide strategic guidance so that we can continue to effectively support charities across York.”

    Trustee case study

sian-balsom-trusteesSiân Balsom is manager at Healthwatch York and a trustee for Scarborough and Ryedale Carers Resource.

“Being a trustee is the most rewarding thing I do,” she said.

“I love my job, but being a trustee is something I choose to do. It’s the chance to use my skills and expertise to help an organisation that I know makes a real difference.

“I was in a unique position when I became a trustee in 2010. I’d been doing training for trustees, explaining why it was a good thing but I’d never done it.

“I’d helped York Carers Centre to become independent and had some experience of being a carer as the result of a family illness. So when the vacancy at Scarborough and Ryedale Carers Resource came up, I was keen to get involved.

“But I was careful to make sure it was the kind of organisation I could work with; that it had a business plan, clear goals and was happy to share its financial position.

“It’s an organisation whose culture fits with my approach and I’m now delighted to be the chair. I encourage anyone with a bit of time to spare to become a trustee.”
