Build An Edible Garden Day

Plans to breathe fresh life into an old York building are moving forward.

We reported in January that a group of volunteers are hoping to turn the Red Tower into a community kitchen, café and activity space.

It is the idea of The Incredible Movement (TIM) in York. And on Sunday (March 29) they are inviting everyone along to help build an edible garden at the tower.

Anyone can drop by between 11am and 2pm and get stuck into to creating an edible raised bed.

And if you can loan or donate tools, wood or compost, they would be gratefully received.

Historic landmark

The Red Tower is a building with a great deal of history. Built in the late 1400s as part of the city’s defences, and in active use until the 1800s it has sadly sat unused for many years.

TIM in York is set to change this deserted structure into a thriving base that communities can use.

When opened over York Residents weekend in January, more than 600 people visited the building and were asked their views about its future.

After this initial consultation, plans were drawn up to turn the tower into a working building, while respecting its historic integrity.

A Red Tower group has been formed which is looking to acquire funding, obtain a long lease on the building from City of York Council and develop ideas in more detail.

The project aims to create a community cooking, café and growing space, which will serve people from across the city and further afield.

So go along, get stuck in and help build a raised bed, sowing seeds ready for the growing season. Or simply have a chat with like minded people end enjoy some lovely homemade refreshments. All ages and abilities welcome.

One of York’s most distinctive old buildings to be reborn as café
