Review: York Pride 2015 – ‘No one is going to rain on our parade’

Pride seems to get better and better every year, and this year’s celebrations saw historic levels of support as local businesses and organisations reached out to show their alliance.

The turnout was also impressive – despite the rain, hundreds gathered to celebrate everything LGBT. The parade began at the Minster, with Transdev’s open-top double decker bus leading the way as hundreds marched in solidarity.

The day was kicked off with some inspirational speeches from some of York’s prominent faith leaders and authoritative figures.

Perhaps the most notable of these was Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Sonya Crisp, who scrapped her prepared speech when she learned of Rev Melvin Tinker’s shocking homophobic radio interview that made national news this week.

Cllr Crisp condemned his comments with the powerful line: “No one is going to rain on our parade”. And although it may have literally rained on the parade, the atmosphere of inclusivity and love was all encompassing.

The drizzle eventually cleared up – the sun even appeared for a brief few minutes – and the Knavesmire festival went off without a hitch.

Crowds gathered around the rainbow-adorned stage, which was graced by a multitude of acts from Kylie and Tina Turner impersonators to dance troops and the headline act, Noughties R&B group Stooshe.

The energy on Knavesmire was tangible: everyone was gathered in mutual love and respect.

Well done Pride, we certainly were proud. See you next year.
