New cycle lane proposed on Tanner Row

A new contra-flow cycle lane could be introduced in a city centre side street to provide cyclists with safer and better route choices.
City of York Councils Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, Cllr Dave Merrett, has agreed in principle today – subject to wider public consultation – that a new contra-flow cycle lane should be introduced on Tanner Row.
The new cycle lane will allow cyclists to ride against the existing flow of one-way traffic between North Street and Rougier Street.
The suggested improvements, agreed in principle by Cllr Dave Merrett, hope to be implemented before the councils new West Offices development is complete in March.
As part of the councils new West Offices, a number of improvements to cycle accessibility are being undertaken with the aim of encouraging employees and members of the public to cycle to and from the new offices.
Cllr Dave Merrett, said: If a cyclist has the option to travel north eastbound on the section of Tanner Row that is currently one-way, they would have much easier journey options and travel on roads with less traffic.
If progressed, the scheme would be funded through the priority cycle budget and will cost approximately £5,000.
