Only 80 years after taking America by storm, the drive-in movie is coming to York.

Monks Cross Shopping Park, Huntington, York YO32 9GX

Fri Jul 22-Sat Aug 13, starting between 9pm and 9.30pm

£25 per car

More details

Eighteen films are being shown in 21 screenings at the Moonlight Drive-in Cinema at Monks Cross Shopping Park this summer, with the first film, Grease, screened on Friday (July 22).

That one and the two that follow – Top Gun and Dirty Dancing are already sold out.

But tickets are still available for the rest of the programme. And as this includes such big screen hits as Mamma Mia!, Back To The Future, Deadpool and Frozen, there should be one that takes your fancy.

To mark the start of the drive-ins, a 1953 Oldsmobile 88 classic American car will be at Monks Cross on Friday from 5pm.

How it works

The drive-in movie cinema provides a silver screen experience that people can enjoy from the comfort of their own cars.

Each film’s sound is transmitted directly into the vehicle’s in-car audio system, via a special FM frequency on the car radio. Refreshments are delivered to the vehicle’s window.

The York venue has capacity for 50 cars. A powerful 2K digital cinema projector capable of using a screen up to 16 metres wide will be used for showing the movies.

Moonlight Drive-in Cinema was founded by entrepreneur Benjamin Stonehouse.

He said: “Unlike other cinemas, inside their car film fans can chat to their friends, even take a phone call and no-one gets bothered by hearing others rustling sweets and crunching popcorn.

“People even bring their babies or dogs.”

Benjamin said he would like Moonlight Drive-in Cinema to stay at Monks Cross Shopping all year round if it proves popular.
