A gig made in heaven! Rock band to play one-off gig in York Minster

Fri 26 Feb, 2021 by YorkMix

Rock church: The Howl & The Hum at York Minster

One of York’s best bands in the city’s greatest building – it’s a gig made in heaven!

It was revealed today that The Howl & The Hum will play York Minster this spring.

And if the timetable to lift lockdown restrictions goes to plan, they will be performing in front of a live audience in the cathedral’s great nave.

York’s award-winning independent promoters Please Please You are behind the gig, alongside two great venues, The Crescent in York and the Brudenell in Leeds.

They have teamed up with the Chapter of York, who run the Minster, to stage this spectacular live music show on Tuesday, 25 May at 8.15pm.

The promoters said: “Depending on Covid-19 restrictions at the time, there may be a very limited socially distanced audience able to attend the show – updates on this will be delivered exclusively via the band’s mailing list.”

Blurring boundaries: The Howl & The Hum

The Howl & The Hum have always blurred the boundaries between indie pop and alternative rock since they emerged through the York open mic scene.

From ruminating on the importance of ‘Human Contact’ to spending amber-hued evenings pondering what it would truly be like to be a shark, through vivid storytelling, the Howl & The Hum effortlessly construct their own peculiar soundscape fit for any cinematic soundtrack.

Determined to broaden the scope of guitar music, the band’s inspirations range from Leonard Cohen and Phoebe Bridgers to Lizzo and Kendrick Lamar.

The band have also been compared to the likes of Massive Attack, Radiohead and Alt-J throughout their range of press plaudits.

Their champions include Huw Edwards on BBC Radio 1, and both Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music.

They have played the BBC Biggest Weekend, as well as festivals including SXSW and the Deer Shed.
