A new York-based digital zine all about “good scran” has launched this month – introducing Scran Press.
Scran Press is an independent publisher interested in food writing of all kinds – including recipes, poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, art, and photography.
Founded by a soon-to-be MA Publishing graduate from York St. John University, Shelby Gibbs has cooked up a creative outlet for foodies everywhere.
“I’ve been very bookish since childhood and so a career in publishing has always felt like the natural progression for me,” Shelby explained.
“However, cookery, baking, and food have always been there too and since starting my MA I’ve been getting more and more into food writing, recipe books, food memoirs, and foodie essays.”
Scran Press was created as a way to combine both her passions.
“It has been so rewarding to see the submissions rolling in.”
Some of Shelby’s most loved foodie places in York are Wine Stories, Little Asia and Los Moros – with a recent favourite being sustainable bar and restaurant Forage.
“I went there a few weeks back and the food was innovative and delicious.”

In the future, Shelby would love to publish an anthology of essays about “good scran, and to one day down the line call this my full-time job.”
“My biggest ambition for Scran is simply to be able to publish food writing that can move people and encourage people to cook, eat and enjoy life that little bit more,” said Shelby.
