Entering its fifth year the York Community Choir Festival returns this week, with seven concerts each featuring at least four different choirs.

This year it is celebrating the inclusivity of making music in groups of all ages and bringing the generations together.

The festival will take place at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre from Saturday, 7 March to Saturday, 14 March 2020. All proceeds will be donated to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre Ltd Charity.

Choirs will be taking part from all over York and the surroundings areas, such as Easingwold, Garrowby, Stamford Bridge, Knaresborough and Tadcaster.

Festival organiser Graham Mitchell, a trustee of the theatre, says “I am particularly pleased that we can include both young and old and bring the generations together in the same concerts.

“The benefits of singing have been widely researched and findings show that communal singing has far reaching benefits for health, happiness and general wellbeing. We are so lucky to have such a variety of choirs in and around York.”

Several choirs are new to the festival this year, including Huntington School Choirs and The Rolling Tones, which are part of the York charity Musical Connections who help combat loneliness and isolation in older people by running regular music sessions across York.

Choirs from primary and secondary schools will also be taking part which reflects the festivals aim to celebrate inclusivity and friendship across the generations.

Tickets are now on sale from the Joseph Rowntree Theatre box office or can be booked on their website.

Dates and times for all the concerts across the week are:

Sat 7th; Wed 11th; Thur 12th; Fri 13th; Sat 14th all at 7.30 pm
Sun 8th; 4.00 pm and Sat 14th 2.00 pm.
