In your face Berlin! And New York, Rome and Barcelona.

Yes you might have a few decent buildings, but you’re not the world’s best city for architecture. Because that is York.

Our city won that honour in the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Travel Awards on Monday night (September 3).

In a ritzy ceremony at the Ham Yard Hotel in Soho, York was also named the third best UK city, behind London and Edinburgh respectively.

Other awards saw Italy named best country, the Greek Islands were best island, and Val-d’Isère the best ski resort.

Beauty and charm

The annual Condé Nast awards recognises the best hotels, destinations, organisers, airlines, cruise lines and spas around the world, as decided by their readers.

Cllr Nigel Ayre, culture, leisure and tourism lead at City of York Council, said the award reflects what “our wonderful city has to offer” adding:

  • I am pleased that, once again, York has been recognised for its beauty and charm which underpins the character of the city.

Of course, it is our residents who make the city a special place and I hope everyone can take pride in what York has achieved.

And council leader Ian Gillies said: “Ian Gillies, Leader of the Council, said: “As the UK’s first Gigabit City, this recognition of York’s remarkable historic offer testifies to the city’s ability to protect and promote our heritage whilst pursuing state-of-the-art solutions for our residents and businesses.”

The award adds to York’s groaning cabinet of trophies.

First it was named Britain’s best place to live, by the Sunday Times.

Then in quick succession, it was revealed to be country’s most summer-friendly city – and voted Britain’s most popular city following a poll of 55,000 people.
