Emergency services were called out to what is believed to be an arson attack on a York home early today (Tuesday).
Police and fire crews were called out to an address on Gillygate at 4.13am after reports of a fire.
Witnesses reported hearing bangs and the sound of glass smashing, and saw two people coming out of the three-storey residential property.
Smoke was then seen coming out the the building.
Firefighters from York and Acomb responded to the blaze which started in a bedroom. They extinguished the fire using hose reel jets.
The North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.”
No people were injured. The fire damage confined to bedroom.
North Yorkshire Police has issued this statement:
Police attended a report of smoke coming from a premises on Gillygate, York, just after 4am this morning.
Officers closed the road to enable Fire Service colleagues to safely deal with the fire.
There was no one in the property, and the road was reopened at 5.15am.
Enquiries are ongoing this morning to determine what caused the fire.
