‘As an asexual person, I can’t get on the property ladder in York’

We asked for your experiences as part of our York’s Property Crisis series. Here, Lucy fears she may never have her own home

Rents are spiralling and house prices have been rising for years. But what does that mean for York residents?

We asked for your experiences with property in the city. And Lucy – not her real name – got in touch to reveal her huge frustrations with a system that just does not cater for her.

Lucy was born and bred in York.

“I was born here and worked minimum wage jobs until I was able to rent,” she told YorkMix.

“In 2013 I moved back in with my parents to take care of my Dad as he died and to support my Mum.”

After her father passed away, she looked to move out but “I was literally laughed at by mortgage lenders.”

Lucy told us: “I finally got a well paid job and am trying to save but as a single asexual/aromantic person I’m prevented from getting on the ladder – as everything is geared for two people saving for a deposit and two people paying the mortgage.

“There are very limited one-bed houses being built and they’re for some insane reason almost the same as the two beds.

“It’s so frustrating that as a born and bred Yorkie if I want to own a home I need to move away or save for another ten years.”

  • Is it time to cap York’s rents – so we don’t lose key workers like Liz and James?
  • ‘York is a really nice place. But the one thing missing is affordable housing’
  • ‘Why should we ship out of York – the city where we were born?’
