Big family event for York cancelled after being hit by spiralling costs

A new family event has been cancelled partially due to spiralling costs.

The York Junior Proms will not now go ahead on on 28 July.

But the main York Proms will go ahead as planned, and tickets for that event are selling well, say organisers.

The York Proms will run on Sunday 27 July on stage in the Museum Gardens. Founder Rebecca Newman launched the Junior York Proms as a sister event, set to take place the following day.

Just like the main Proms, it would have featured popular classical music and picnics, with a programme of children’s favourites.

And there were plans to create a children’s choir to sing a new song for York.

However, that dream has now disappeared – at least for this year.

In a social media post, York Junior Proms organisers said: “We are sad to announce that the Junior Proms will not go ahead for 2025.

“We have had to come to this disappointing decision due to a combination of factors, not least increasing costs and the impact the ‘cost of living crisis’ is having on our audience.

“So much progress has been made and we still believe this event is possible, so we hope to be able to secure grant funding and commercial partnerships soon, to enable a 2026 event to go ahead.

“All ticket holders have been informed and refunds will be automatic.”

The York Proms last year

On a post on the York Proms Facebook page, the team said: “Sadly, it is still a very difficult environment for events post-Covid, and it can be very hard to get new events off the ground.

“We are sad to see the Junior Proms not being possible this year but fingers crossed for 2026!

“The York Proms is performing well and our ticket sales are breaking all records, so rest assured we are still on track for another great night of music.

“A family ticket (two adults, two children) is about the same cost as the Junior Proms would’ve been, so if you were planning to go and are disappointed to not have a picnic concert to go to the week, maybe take a look at the York Proms on the Sunday afternoon and evening.

“Be quick to get the early bird price which ends in a few days!”
