Some bus travel is about to get more expensive, particularly if you are a student or pay by cash.

Higher fares come in from Monday (3 July) on the First York network.

The cheapest adult single fare will rise from £1.20 to £1.40 when purchased using the ‘tap on tap off’ card readers.

But if you pay with cash or contactless it will go up to £2.

All adult singles are capped at £2 as part of the continuing national fare subsidy by the Government.

The FirstDay ticket will stay the same at £4.80 and the current prices of all Bundle and Group tickets will remain unchanged.

Student fares will all increase from 24 July. A FirstDay Student fare will go up from £3.20 to £4, a FirstWeek Student will rise from £12 to £15, and FirstMonth Student rises from £50 to £62.

You can see all the changes here.

Kayleigh Ingham, commercial director of First Bus for North and West Yorkshire, said:

“By freezing the price of our tickets for multiple journeys we have continued to ensure that the average cost per trip remains low.

“Our business is not immune from the impact of inflation and rising business costs. We have looked carefully at how we can limit price increases for customers and balance this with the challenge of maintaining a sustainable network as we build back passenger numbers.”

She added: “These fare changes reflect the customer travel and buying habits we’re now seeing since the pandemic.

“At a time when everyone is looking at how to manage rising living costs and how much they use their own transport with continued high fuel prices, the bus is an affordable and sustainable way to travel.”
