A bridge that had a weight limit imposed after being described as ‘substandard’ has been repaired.

A weight limit was imposed on Bishopthorpe Bridge in October 2023 after the RAC Foundation found it to be substandard. The weight limit was lifted today (Monday, 7 April).

Work began to strengthen the bridge in January.

The £300,000 project saw a corrugated steel arch installed by contractor PB Construction below the bridge to strengthen it and ensure its long-term future.

In the coming weeks, more cosmetic work will take place on the bridge. This means the cycle path that runs underneath, linking Appleton Court and Brunswick Nursery, will stay closed until 13 May.

The diversion route is via The Orchard, Beech Avenue, Maple Avenue, Appleton Road and Copmanthorpe Lane and will be signposted in both directions.

Transport lead on City of York Council Cllr Kate Ravilious said: “We appreciate everyone’s patience while we have carried out these essential repairs.

“We have done all we can to minimise disruption with Appleton Road and the bridge remaining open to pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. Access has been maintained to businesses at all times too.

“With the weight limit lifted over the next few weeks work will continue around the bridge. We thank people for their understanding while we finish this much needed project.”

The news will come as a relief to the people of Copmanthorpe who have seen lorries diverted their way while the bridge was out of bounds to HGVs.
