Thu 1 Oct, 2015 by YorkMix

Bishy Road Traders Association chair Johnny Hayes celebrates on Fossgate. Only joking, it's Bishopthorpe Road

Bishy Road is still top of the shops – making the Great British High Street awards shortlist for the second year running.

Social media activity counts too. Follow @bishyroadnet on Twitter

And include @TheGBHighSt and the hashtag #GBHighSt

The York street was named on Thursday (October 1) as one of the top three streets in the Local Centre/ Parade Of Shops category.

But to power past its competitors, Faulkner Street in Chester and Bath Place in Taunton, and be crowned champion, Bishy Road now needs the votes of its fans.

A record 230 applicants entered the Great British High Street competition this year and for the first time, the public has the chance to vote directly for their best-loved high street online.

‘In it to win it’

Johnny Hayes, Chairman of the Bishy Road Traders Association, said:

We cannot express how overjoyed we are to have Bishy Road shortlisted again for the Great British High Street awards.

The entire community is absolutely thrilled to have made the shortlist and it is the talk of the street.

We ended up in the top three last year and this year we are in it to win it for York!

The Great British High Street competition is run by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

High streets minister (who knew?) Marcus Jones said: “These awards are a great opportunity to not only celebrate those that are the best of the best, but also to help others learn their valuable tips for success.

“If you cherish the hard work going on in Bishy Road then show your support and get voting.”

Incredible year

“Since the competition last autumn it has been an incredible year for Bishy Road, with everything going from strength to strength,” Johnny said.

Our entry picked up on where we left off last year, so included the community help securing new Christmas lights, the Tour de Yorkshire street party and our first ever and very successful Food Festival.

And there is so much more happening in the coming months with our winter lights switch on ceremony, being part of the York Ice Trail and our annual Christmas card competition. We are also developing a Bishy Road app.

Judges are looking for high streets with close community links. The overall winner will be decided by a vote and social media activity.

Johnny said: “I hope that all of York’s residents and businesses will publicly back Bishy Road and vote for us!”
