The race to be our next Prime Minister reaches York this week.

The two candidates vying for the leadership of the Conservative Party – and by default the keys to 10 Downing Street – are to hold a hustings in the city tomorrow (Thursday, 4 July).

Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt will be at a city centre location to meet local members of the Conservative Party in the evening.

Chairman of the York Conservatives Matt Freckelton told YorkMix:

  • It’s great that the hustings for the Yorkshire and Humber region will be taking place in York.

There is a significant amount of interest from party members in York and this will present a unique opportunity to hear from the two candidates.

Only qualifying party members who have registered in advance are able to attend. Security is expected to be tight.

The York hustings comes three days before 160,000 Conservative Party members receive their postal ballots.

Voting closes on 22 July, with the winner revealed on 23 July. The victor will be appointed Prime Minister by the Queen the following day.

According to opinion polls and the bookies, Boris Johnson is still the clear favourite.
