One of York’s most beautiful new corners is about to become even more colourful.
The Artists Garden is one of the unsung benefits of the renovation of York Art Gallery. And it is about to reveal its very first artwork.
Found behind the gallery, and accessible to all via Marygate and Museum Gardens, the York Artists Garden is already a beautiful spot to walk and relax.
The idea is that the garden will be both a living work of art itself, with its flowers and plants changing over the seasons – and also be home to some exciting new artworks.
The first is set to be unveiled on Friday, August 19, with a ticket-only launch party on Thursday, August 18.
Ten tree trunks
Foundation Myths is a new commission by Ordinary Architecture, an art, architecture and design practice with an international profile.

The installation, produced especially for the Artists Garden, draws on the rich history of the site and its many uses over the centuries.
Ordinary Architecture have created 10 bright yellow ceramic tree trunks varying in height which will be positioned in parallel rows.
The work harks back to the area’s former use as an orchard as well as the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey within the abbey precinct.
Something completely new
Curator of art at the gallery, Laura Turner, said Foundation Myths “intertwines the many threads of history which run through the gardens as well as drawing inspiration from the ceramics on show in the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA).”
She added:
The new commission will officially open to the public on August 19 and is free.
