Firefighters were called after a campfire was left burning and unattended in a village near York.

They went to the incident in Earswick at 7.15pm.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The Huntington crew attended and extinguished a fire in the open close to woodland.

“This was a campfire left unattended. Crews extinguished using backpack sprayers and small tools.”

It comes after the service has issued warnings about the dangers of doing this in the warm, dry weather, saying: “Don’t have barbecues or campfires on dry grass or moor land. Hot coals and stray sparks could cause a wildfire.”
