One of the stalwart shops of Stonegate is to close for good on Christmas Eve.
Debbie’s York, the sweet and gift shop, will not reopen in 2021 – after a double-whammy of a year ‘devastated’ trade.
Owner Richard Tolson put out a message via the Indie York Facebook page today explaining that he wouldn’t be renewing the lease on the shop.
He said: “During 2020, we have had to contend with Covid, closing the city, and the resurfacing of Stonegate.
“This has devastated not only our business but York in general, and I am sure we will sadly not be alone in closing.
“The high street is going through a huge transformation, and I’m not sure what it will look like on the other side.
“2021 is going to be a difficult year and I am not able to sustain any more loss. May I take this opportunity to thank all our customers, near and far.”
Firm favourite
Debbie’s was a firm favourite for many years with residents and businesses alike.
More than 100 confectionery brands were crammed into the small shop, featuring old favourites like Mon Chéri, Niederegger and Farah’s from Harrogate, alongside their home-made fudge bars and chocolate novelties.
From Easter onwards, Debbie’s ice cream counter was packed with flavours like rhubarb and custard, apple pie, bubble gum, honeycomb and Irn-Bu, all created with love and care at their unit in Scarborough.
Richard said the shop will now hold a closing down sale “with 50% off many items.
“Good luck to everyone and please come and support us in our final weeks.”
