Company involved in the Olympics will rebuild notorious stretch of the road that links York with the Mersey

Thu 22 Sep, 2022 by David Dunning

The road hugs the side of the hill at Kex Gill between Harrogate and Skipton

An engineering company which was involved in the delivery of the 2012 London Olympics and the capital’s Crossrail project has been selected to carry out the re-alignment of the A59 at Kex Gill.

The road which runs from the junction with Blossom Street in York, leads eventually all the way to the Mersey Tunnel via Harrogate, Skipton and Preston.

Kex Gill is a notorious stretch clinging to the side of a hill with a narrow carriageway. But it still sees large HGVs and a stream of traffic travelling from Yorkshire to Lancashire.

North Yorkshire has awarded preferred bidder status to John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd, a family-owned international civil engineering and construction business, pending the contract award.

The decision is dependent on funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) which is currently reviewing the Full Business Case with a decision expected in October.

Contractors will move on site this December to clear the moorland by late February next year to avoid the bird nesting season. An estimated completion date is May 2025.

Kex Gill, between Skipton and Blubberhouses, has a history of landslips and over the years there have been many unplanned and costly closures.

They cause an inconvenience for users of the A59, the surrounding towns and villages, and are damaging for businesses and local farmers.
