City of York Council has been included on the employer ‘roll of honour’ on the National Apprenticeships website, whichshowcases organisations who are committed to Apprenticeships, in recognising the business benefits they gain from being part of the scheme.

To mark the authorities commitment to the scheme, some of the 46 apprentices who are currently employed by the council came together for a photo with the leader of the council, Cllr James Alexander, Chief Executive, Kersten England and Cllr Julie Gunnell, on Monday 18 February 2013.

Councillor Alexander said: “It’s great to see that our efforts to increase the number of apprentices in York have been nationally recognised and I hope that we can continue to expand the range and number of apprenticeships offered in the city.”

Kersten England said: “I’m pleased that the council have been able to offer 59 apprenticeships since 2011 and help to give some of the young people living in York the hands on experience they need to kick start their careers.”

City of York Council cabinet member for Corporate Services, Cllr Julie Gunnell, Said: “Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to start building their careers, who might feel that college or university is not the right path for them to take to gain further qualifications.”

The council will be taking part in National Apprenticeship Week 11-15 March in several ways, including apprentices from the council sharing their experiences at events around the city. The aim of this is to help give young people an insight into what being an apprentice entails. Apprentices will also be encouraged to shadow managers within the council for a day during apprenticeship week so they can see first hand what the future might hold for them.
