‘It’s a matter of public safety’ – York road barrier not fixed months after crash

A damaged barrier on a main road in York will be replaced – nine months after the crash that caused it.

The barrier on Hull Road, by the roundabout near B&Q, was hit in the collision at Christmas.

It is set to be replaced in the first weekend of September, York council has said, amid calls for repairs and to remove debris.

Hull Road Liberal Democrat parish councillor Caleb Pell and activist Danielle Mason said a replacement barrier was needed to keep pedestrians safe while large chunks of debris remain uncleared.

A council spokesperson said inspections following the crash found the barrier was still safe and three months’ notice was needed before works could take place.

Ms Mason said she was concerned about what would happen if there was another crash into the barrier, adding it was not the first time there had been an accident.

The Liberal Democrat said: “It’s only a matter of luck that there hasn’t been another accident whilst the footpath is in use.

“We are once again calling on the council to take action and replace the barrier as soon as possible. It is a matter of public safety.”

Cllr Pell, of Heslington Parish Council, said it seemed as though the council had not been to the site given how much debris was still there.

He said: “We have raised the need to fix the safety barrier twice already with the council but they haven’t done anything.

“Local Liberal Democrats have cleared away as much of the debris from the car crash as we can but there are still large chunks of bodywork on site.”

The council’s spokesperson said efforts were already underway to replace the barrier but the works would be significant and a road closure would be required.

The spokesperson said: “Our team are satisfied that the existing barrier is still able to act as a safety barrier while we arrange for replacement works to take place, so we do not need a temporary repair or to arrange urgent repairs.

“As these are not urgent works we are required to give the three months notice for the repairs in accordance with the legislation to ensure coordination with other planned road works to minimise the impact on all users.

“If the barrier fails to provide a safe restraint in the meantime then we will of course review.”
