An internal investigation by York Green Party has ruled that Dave Taylor should be suspended from the party for failing to uphold the ethical principles of the party.

This follows comments by Cllr Taylor in July regarding the death of footballer Jack Charlton.

The day after the Leeds United legend died aged 85, the former Lord Mayor of York posted on Facebook: “Jack ‘Bloodsports’ Charlton has died. Sick of the adulation of this animal abuser. Being good at kicking a leather football around does not absolve him.”

He later issued an unreserved apology.

As part of the investigation, the committee also ruled that he had brought the party in to disrepute.

During his suspension, Cllr Taylor will not sit as a Green Party councillor. He will continue to sit as an independent councillor.

Following the ruling, the Green Party has removed home as chair of the children, education & communities policy & scrutiny committee.

Cllr Andy D’Agorne, leader of the Green Group and deputy council leader, said: “Firstly, on behalf of York Green councillors and York Green Party, I would like to apologise once again to the Charlton family and friends for the offensive remarks and any distress this has caused them at a difficult time.

“I have worked with Dave for 14 years and during this time he has been a hard-working councillor and involved in many projects and issues that are important to those living in York.

“However this does not excuse his actions in this instance.

“My colleagues and I in York Green Party will now focus on the important work we are doing to make our city a fairer and greener place to live and work.”

The Yorkshire & the Humber regional party has ruled that the suspension should last for six months.
