A dog has been rescued after falling approximately 150ft from a cliff in North Yorkshire.

On Tuesday (5 August), the Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team was called out to locate and recover the dog, which had fallen near Robin Hood’s Bay.

The team arrived at the scene in 4×4 vehicles equipped with specialist cliff rescue gear. A Cliff Technician was promptly deployed over the edge to search for the dog and assess its condition.

Following a short shoreline search, the dog was found, remarkably still alive despite the significant fall.

Due to the dog’s size and its injuries, recovering it back up the cliff wasn’t feasible. The team requested assistance from Whitby RNLI, who launched both their inshore and all-weather lifeboats.

Once on scene, the dog was carefully transferred to the inshore lifeboat and brought to the slipway, where it was reunited with its relieved owners.

The Coastguard team then took the dog and owners to a local vets, where the dog is expected to make a full recovery.

A spokesperson for Whitby Coastguard said:

“After what has been a particularly challenging week for our community, we’re grateful to end this call-out with a happy outcome, and we’d like to thank everyone involved for their teamwork and quick response.

“We’d also like to take this opportunity to remind the public of the risks around cliff edges. Please always keep dogs on a lead when walking near cliffs, accidents happen quickly, and the outcome isn’t always as fortunate as today.

“Remember, if you or anyone else appear to be in trouble near the coast, please never hesitate to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. We are always here to help, 24/7.”
