A York shop floor previously filled floor to ceiling with clothing and fashion accessories now looks like this.
This is inside Marchbrae, the Scottish clothing retailer on St Helen’s Square.
All shelving, railings and other shop fittings have gone, along with the promotional posters which used to sit in the windows.
Marchbrae York was still posting on its Instagram and Facebook feeds last month, but made no mention of reopening.
Some of its feeds appear to have been taken over by another retailer, the Woollen Mill.
Prime location
Marchbrae opened its York store in December 2017.
The company specialises in country outdoor clothing and accessories – with Barbour and Joules among the brands it stocks.
It was a prime location – inside the former York Savings Bank on the corner of Blake Street and St Helen’s Square.
The property is Grade II listed and dates from 1829, being extended in 1924. It previously housed a branch of the TSB bank.
But the location came with a hefty rent.
We have contacted Marchbrae’s head office to ask for more details about what’s happened.
It now means that two prestigious buildings on St Helen’s Square are empty.
There are no plans to reopen the neighbouring Carluccio’s restaurant after it went into administration.
