Every child born in York during the next 12 months could have a tree planted in their name thanks to a new scheme launched by the Rotary Club of York.

The York Rotary Family Tree Planting Partnership offer is free to all parents registering the birth of their child through York Register Office.

Parents may sign up online here.

The scheme is being supported by employee-volunteering charity York Cares, with volunteers from Benenden Health and Portakabin starting to plant trees on 28th and 29th November.

‘Wonderful initiative’

The site identified for the first tree planting is a piece of land on Haxby Road owned by York St John University and adjacent to the University Sports Ground.

Georgia Everall, Volunteering Project Officer, York Cares, said:

  • This is a wonderful initiative that will commemorate the birth of every child in York in the next 12 months – and will also help to improve the environment in which those young children will live.

Around 3,000 children are born in York each year and it’s hoped that the majority of parents will want to get involved in the scheme.

The Rotary project in York is supported by Brunswick Organic Nursery, City of York Registry Office, Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, Treemendous York, the Woodland Trust, York Cares, and York St John University.
