Can’t get on the York property ladder? How about building your own home?
City of York Council is offering new opportunities for self-builders, releasing two new plots.
Both are on Dane Avenue, Acomb, where outline planning permission for one detached house per plot has been secured.
Each plot costs £95,000. They are designed to support people to get on the housing ladder by building their own homes.
Previously, the site was occupied by a pair of semi-detached ‘British and Iron Foundation’ council houses. It is now cleared ready for construction.
Here’s what you need to know:
- utilities can be connected from the adjacent road – plot buyers will need to apply for new service connections from the relevant providers
- each home must have a minimum of two bedrooms with maximum gross internal areas of 106 sq m (plot 1) and 114 sq m (plot 2)
- to support buyers and their architects, an approved design code has been developed which encourages building lower-carbon homes.
Cllr Michael Pavlovic, executive member for housing, planning and safer communities, said: “These two plots present an opportunity to build two high-quality homes.
“We know there is considerable demand for well-serviced self-build plots and here, at Dane Avenue, is a chance to add to a thriving community and create two homes for each household and future households to enjoy.”
The council’s self build team will provide support and guidance to those interested, from the registration process and through construction until the homes are ready for moving in.
