Firefighters remain at Langdale Moor as efforts continue to bring the large moorland blaze under control on its fifth day.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service have thanked those who have supported the response, including individuals who donated supplies for crews, neighbouring fire services, partner organisations, local businesses, and farmers.

Since the fire broke out on Tuesday (12 August), covering an area of around 5 sq km, multiple fire engines, specialist appliances, and a helicopter have been deployed to help with water supplies.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, and a North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said crews are likely to remain at the scene for some time.

“We continue to ask people to avoid the area and advise people who are impacted by smoke from this incident to keep doors and windows closed.”

Yesterday it was confirmed that smoke reported in and around York was drifting from the Langdale Moor fire.

The fire service have also urged the public to follow safety advice during the current hot and dry weather. The guidance, issued by the North York Moors National Park, is as follows.

You must NOT:

  • Discard cigarettes or matches anywhere, including from car windows along any road. Even a tiny spark can start an uncontrollable blaze.
  • Light barbecues or campfires in the National Park, surrounding gardens, allotments, lay-bys, or any nearby open land or forest.
  • Leave glass bottles or reflective litter, sunlight can ignite dry vegetation through them.

The advice to visitors and community members regarding the wildfire at Langdale Forest/Fylingdales Moor is as follows:

  • Public risk remains low, but please stay away from the immediate area of the fire to allow emergency crews to work safely.
  • If you’re in an area directly affected by smoke, keep windows/doors closed and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity.
  • If you see any signs of smouldering or fire, call 999. Do not assume somebody else has done this.
  • Be vigilant – challenge unsafe behaviour where you see it and set the right example.
