The Langdale Moor fire has now entered its seventh day, with North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service confirming that crews remain on site tackling the blaze.
As of 9:15am today (Monday 18 August), five fire engines and specialist argocats, vehicles designed for wildfire response, were still in operation at the scene.
The fire was first reported on the evening of Monday 11 August, when crews were called to reports of smoke. Additional firefighters were deployed the following morning, and the fire was declared a major incident on Wednesday 13 August, after it spread across approximately 5 sq km.
Over the weekend, North Yorkshire fire crews received widespread support from neighbouring fire services, partner agencies, farmers, local businesses, and members of the public who donated supplies. A helicopter and multiple specialist appliances were also used to assist with water supplies.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and crews are expected to remain on the moor for some time.
Chief Fire Officer Jonathan Dyson thanked crews and the community for their efforts:
“Our crews, control room staff and officers, have worked around the clock this past week to tackle the moorland fire at Langdale. It’s been especially hot and tiring work for the crews and officers at the scene.
“The generosity of communities and businesses through donations, support and well wishes has been truly outstanding.
“I’m especially grateful to local farmers, gamekeepers and partner agencies who’ve assisted on the ground and to our neighbouring fire services for providing additional resources.”
