The first ever fixed speed camera in North Yorkshire was knocked down on the day it was due to go live.
The camera, located on the A64 Sherburn High Street, was installed as part of a fixed three month trial to enforce a 30mph speed limit.
However, reports came in this morning that the lamppost hosting the newly-installed fixed safety camera had been knocked down overnight, in what is believed to have been a deliberate attack.
The vandalism took place at around 2.20am, and North Yorkshire Police are currently investigating the damage.
Work is ongoing to reinstall the camera at an alternative site in the Sherburn area.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “It is disappointing to see that something intended to help keep the village safe and protect members of the public has been targeted by vandals.
“Anyone who has any information about those responsible including anyone who witnessed it or has footage from a dashcam or doorbell camera is asked to get in touch.”
