It's burger time!

It’s burger o’clock – as York’s newest burger restaurant is all set to open.

Fat Hippo will open on Low Petergate on tomorrow (Friday).

Specialising in ‘roll up your sleeves and get it all over your face food’, visitors can expect a varied selection of beef, chicken and vegan burgers.

The independent British restaurant group first launched in Newcastle in 2010 and has venues in places such as Leeds, Durham, Liverpool, Nottingham – and now York!

Fat Hippo takes over the building previously occupied by Jimmy’s, and before that was Café Rouge.

YorkMix spoke with Nick Fountain, head of marketing and communications at Fat Hippo, to find out more about the York location.

“York for us as a city, we like the history of it,” said Nick. “The buildings are quite quirky and different.

All about burgers

“We had quite a few customers and followers on our social platforms that were messaging asking when we’re coming to York – so it felt like it was the right thing to be here.

“As soon as we leaked out that we were coming to York there was instant excitement.”

Fat Hippo aim to be a place that caters for everyone, “it’s more about the experience of loosening your belt.”

“It’s a great place for date nights, it’s a great place to bring your families – we have our build-your-own-burger for the kids.”

The menu is “massively broad” and contains a wide variety of vegan options. “I think we’ve got one of the most extensive vegan lists for any other type of business that’s similar to us.”

Menu highlights include Wachos (waffles fries with smashed beef and liquid cheese, £10.90), the Kiev-C (buttermilk chicken burger with cheesy garlic bacon crumb, £12.90), the Oprah Sin-Free (a plant based patty with Cajun ‘fakon’ bits, £13.90), and the PB+JJ (£13.90) – a double beef patty with chunky peanut butter and bacon jam.

“It’s quite different,” said Nick, the PB+JJ being one of his personal favourites. “As soon as you have it you realise how well it works.”

Fat Hippo will also have a special lunchtime deal for a selected burger and fries for £8, which is available on weekdays until 4pm.

The restaurant also have a special vegan-friendly ice cream (£6) – a jet black vanilla soft serve blended from almonds and cashews, which was created in partnership with the ice cream company DÁPPA.

The York location is the second Fat Hippo restaurant the ice cream has been launched in, the other being Shoreditch. “We’re looking to roll it out across the rest of the business,” said Nick.

The venue has created around 40 jobs.

Fat Hippo will be open to the public from tomorrow (Friday). The restaurant will be open from 11am – 11pm, Monday to Sunday.
