York can be a pretty crowded, noisy place – especially with the millions of tourists who come to visit.

Sometimes though, you just want a bit of quiet time.

If you are an introvert like me, you may find solace in my top five hidden gems in and around the centre of York.

1. St Anthonys Garden

Found between the City Walls and Peasholme Green, this is a peace of heaven. A perfect little garden, it’s the place to find some tranquility away from the commotion of York.

And it looks beautiful whatever the season. Definitely worth a repeat visit!

2. Osbornes@68

If you are looking for a quaint coffee shop Osbornes on Gillygate is the one for you. As an introvert I find it the perfect place to grab a coffee and a slice of cake. And on a nice day you can sit in the garden with a view of York’s famous walls.

3. Dick Turpin’s Grave

This one is for the historian introverts. If you weren’t already aware, the infamous Dick Turpin is buried here right in York.

Go past the Postern Gate pub and up Lead Mill Lane and you will find St George’s graveyard tucked away almost out of sight.

There is a board that explains the highwayman’s dubious activities. It’s usually a quiet place to sit during the day.

4. The Hi Ho Club

The Hi Ho Club is only known to the most knowledgable and discerning drinkers. The decor is themed on an American speakeasy, and you have to book in advance to receive a secret password to enter this bar.

Just off King’s Square it is probably one of the most secret drinking joints in York.

5. Bish Bash Pot

If you are bit of creative introvert or are just looking for a wholesome activity Bish Bash Pot is a great way to express your artistic nature, by painting pottery.

Found on Walmgate, it comes complete with cafe and is a lovely spot to share with friends.
