A York MP has raised the uncertainty over the future of the Great British Railways project with the government.
GBR is intended to be the new public sector body which will oversee Britain’s railways. Yesterday City of York Council leader Keith Aspden told YorkMix he feared the idea has been shelved.
York Central MP Rachael Maskell has now asked the transport minister Kevin Foster when the city will know if its bid to host the GBR headquarters has been successful.
Speaking in the House of Commons, she said it was important for the city to know what was happening as the timetable had slipped.
Mr Foster told her that he had many powerful representations made by interested parties from York, and the Government would make its intentions clear shortly.
The idea behind GBR was to simplify the rail network and improve services for passengers by absorbing the state-owned infrastructure company Network Rail and taking on many functions from the DfT.
York was one of six towns and cities shortlisted to be the HQ city for GBR.
