A Word War Two bomb, found on a housing development in Goole has been blown up in a controlled explosion.

Homes were evacuated and the M62 was shut to allow experts to carry out the detonation. There was a lot traffic congestion and delays throughout Saturday on the diversions.

It’s thought that it was dropped by an allied Lancaster bomber during a crash-landing.

This is the moment a WWII bomb, which was uncovered in Goole yesterday, was safely detonated.

All restrictions have now been lifted, with local roads clear of debris and open to the public.

Highways Yorkshire is currently undertaking safety checks of the M62 in the area.

They will update when the closures have been removed.

The no-fly zone above the location has also been lifted and it is now safe for businesses to reopen and the public to leave their homes.

On behalf of the Humberside Emergency Taskforce, Humberside Police thanked the members of the public, particularly those from buildings that had to be evacuated, for staying clear of the cordon and allowing the team to bring this operation to a safe conclusion.

Last night we reported:

Humberside Police responded to reports that an unexploded WW2 bomb that had been found at a new housing development on Rawcliffe Road, Goole, just off the M62 by Junction 36.

Colleagues from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, who have been onsite since late Thursday night, have now confirmed that the device is live and are making plans to safely detonate the bomb.

All properties in the immediate vicinity have been evacuated as a precaution.

As a precaution, and to allow the experts to complete their preparatory work before they safely dispose of the device, an area of an extended cordon is being enforced.

This will came into effect from 8pm (Friday Evening) and the East and Westbound carriageways of the M62 (between junctions 35 and 37) has been closed and a section of the A614.

Those restrictions will stay in place until the device is successfully detonated, anticipated some time Saturday 24 July.

Those living or staying in the wider immediate area are asked to remain indoors.

Businesses within the cordoned area have been asked to close until the the bomb has been made safe.

Road diversions will be in place across all affected roads. For drivers using the M62, visit the Highways England website here for further information.

Drivers travelling Eastbound for the south of the River Ouse would need to leave the M62 at junction 35 and junction 34 if they are travelling north of the river.

Drivers travelling Westbound along the M62 would need to leave at junction 37.

Additional local road closures are as follows:

  • Tom Pudding Way at the Capitol Park Roundabout
  • Rawcliffe Road at the Airmyn Roundabout (Glews)
  • Rawcliffe Road at the New Potter Grange junction

Abnormal loads will be held or diverted at Humberside Police’s discretion.

Air travel may also be affected, with a temporary 1600m vertical no-fly zone enforced over the site until at least midday on Saturday 24 July.
