York pupils have been hearing first-hand about what life is like in the House of Commons, with a visit from York-educated MP Alan Mak.

Mr Mak, Conservative member of Parliament for Havant in Hampshire, studied at St Peter’s School and in 2015 became the first MP of Chinese ethnic origin.

He won his seat comfortably with 23,159 votes and a 51.7% share of the total vote.

The discussion explored Mr Mak’s career and his experiences in Parliament so far.

Mak said: “It was an absolute pleasure to come back to St Peter’s, a school that I have such fond memories of.

“Peterites have always been a bright bunch and I was certainly grilled in my Q & A session with current pupils. I think a few of them have a future in politics!”

The Havant MP added:

Schools are a real priority of mine, so it was a pleasure to be invited up here to share my experiences as a Member of Parliament. In my own constituency of Havant, I have been working tirelessly to promote schools and colleges as a vital element in a secure, healthy and prosperous society.

More constructive than Guy Fawkes…

Leo Winkley, head master of St Peter’s School, said: “It is a great pleasure to welcome Alan back to St Peter’s School. Alan is one of four Old Peterites currently serving in the House of Commons.

Given that Guy Fawkes is perhaps our most notable Old Boy, it is hugely reassuring to know that our current alumni are contributing to political life in more positive and constructive ways!

He added:

Alan has a genuine interest in education and the good partnership work of independent schools like St Peter’s, engaging with colleagues in state maintained schools to share resources and generate opportunities for all.

It’s terrific to have Alan with us, and we continue to follow his political career with close interest.
