Heavy rain and gales could bring flooding to York at the start of the week

The first floods of the autumn may be on their way to York as forecasters warn us to be braced for a wet and windy start to the week.

Fortunately any flooding is at the lower end of the scale, restricted to riverside paths. No properties are at risk.

After a wet weekend, Accuweather is predicting 5½ hours and 8mm of rain on Monday in York (November 9).

Rainfall could be worse elsewhere in Yorkshire leading to rivers rising.

The Met Office states:

Following wet weather over the weekend rivers are likely to rise in response to this rainfall with a low risk of localised flooding.

As a result the Environmental Agency issued a flood alert for these areas:

Riverside footpaths and low-lying land in York and to the south as far as Naburn Lock, including Kings Staith, Queens Staith, and South Esplanade.

It stated: “River levels have started to respond to this rainfall and are rising slowly. The current level at York is 2.10m or 6 feet 11 inches. Further rainfall is expected on Sunday.”

It’s also likely to feel breezy. The Met Office has issued a gale warning for the whole of Yorkshire, saying:

The southwesterly wind is expected to become strong during Monday morning, with gales and locally severe gales over high ground, but also some very gusty winds to the east of high ground as well.

Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely.
