Celebrate York’s local hit music and comedy spots with Independent Venue Week.

York is known for its hidden gems in the shape of local independent shops and cafes, but what shouldn’t be overlooked is the venues that give us live music and comedy week in and week out. So here’s a whole week to celebrate them!

Independent Venue Week was created in 2013 by I Like The Sound Of That Ltd with its first event in 2014. It is an event that takes place across the UK and also in the US.

The York venues taking part in Independent Venue Week this year are FortyFive Vinyl Café, The Basement, Spark:York, The Crescent, The Fulford Arms and The Victoria Vaults.

It runs from Monday 27 Jan to Sunday 2 Feb. Take a look at what events are happening across the week.

‘Something for everyone’

York band The Howl & The Hum are gigging during the week

Chris Sherrington, owner at The Fulford Arms and secretary of York Music Venues Network, said the number of venues taking part is impressive for a city the size of York. He said:

  • Independent Venue Week is a great opportunity for both visitors and residents to come and see the great range of excellent venues the city has to offer and enjoy some big name artists and local upcoming talent in an intimate environment.

With 24 shows and more than 50 performers across the six venues taking part this year, there really is something for everyone and these shows are great adverts for the thousands of gigs that take place across the city throughout the year.

These venues are more than just a place for live events, they’re a space for the community of all walks of life to come together and enjoy themselves. And I think that’s worth celebrating.

For more information visit the Independent Venue Week website.

Here’s to a future of many more memorable nights while supporting local businesses.
