Organised by running club York Knavesmire Harriers, the annual event is back for its 42nd year on Sunday 19 January.

1,800 runners from all over the country will be partaking in the road race this weekend. Starting from York Racecourse, the course will follow through Bishopthorpe towards Appleton Roebuck.

There will be a series of temporary road closures in place for the race, with those coming along to support runners advised to take note of closures in place.

Refreshments will also be available, where you’ll be able to purchase hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and cake from the Brass Monkey Cafe.

The Brass Monkey Half Marathon was created in 1983 by Brian Hughes, who is also the founder of the York Knavesmire Harriers.

It came about when a few hardy runners from the Knavesmire Harriers were looking for a race to enter as part of their training for the London Marathon.

It initially operated out of St Chads Church on Lorne Street, and race HQ is now at the Racourse.

Just over 20 runners took part in the first ever Brass Monkey Half Marathon – which has grown to a whopping 1,800 runners today.

If you’re participating in the Brass Monkey Half Marathon this weekend – whether you’re trying for a PB, training for a marathon, or simply like the challenge – we wish you the best of luck!
