York Minster will be marking the coronation of King Charles next week with worship, music, exhibitions, and a volunteer recruitment event.

With the coronation of King Charles just around the corner, the city will be gearing up to celebrate the crowning of the new monarch.

Including, of course, at York Minster – where the King visited in early April for the first Royal Maundy service of his reign.

The celebrations at the Minster will take place from Friday 5 to Monday 8 May.

The Minster celebrations will kick off with a special Evensong service on the eve of the coronation, where the Choir of York Minster will perform Handel’s Zadok the Priest. The Very Revd Dominic Barrington, Dean of York will also give an address at the service.

Commenting on the coronation weekend at the cathedral, the Very Revd Dominic Barrington, Dean of York said: “The coronation of our new Monarch is a momentous and significant event in the life of the nation and the Commonwealth.

“I am sure that we will all celebrate the magnificent, dazzling and colourful pageantry of this immensely historic occasion.”

Also happening throughout the weekend will be services and prayers for the King and the Royal Family, bell ringing, an invitation to picnic in the Minster’s gardens with family and friends, and more.

York Minster will also be joining the coronation’s national charity campaign ‘The Big Help Out’ – which encourages people to have a go at volunteering.

The minster currently relies on the support of over 400 volunteers to enhance the experience and enjoyment of people, worshipping at and visiting the cathedral.

“We hope to get people excited and interested in becoming a volunteer at York Minster,” said the Dean of York.
