Housing Week 2013 announced

Tue 11 Jun, 2013 by Press Release

Issued by City of York Council

City of York Council’s has announced that Housing Week 2013 will run from 14-18 October with a focus on the role housing plays in preventing and addressing poverty.

Following the success of City of York Council’s first ever Housing Week last October, a range of activities and events throughout the week in 2013 will unite private and public sector, landlords and other housing providers to progress thinking and action in the city.

The housing week will promote a greater understanding of the links between housing, health, poverty and employment. Among the matters discussed will be the role of housing in enabling people to take up employment and increase their income from work as well as monitoring the impact of welfare reform cuts.

In keeping with this collaborative approach, interested parties from all sectors have been invited to share with the council their ideas of what events and debates they’d like to see taking place during this week.

Councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing, Cabinet Member for Health, Housing and Adult Social Care, said: “This link between poverty and housing is one of the hottest topics for housing organisations this year and an all-too-real issue faced by many households in the city.

“Just as last year’s conference helped focus York housing sector on the challenges within the city, we hope to hone that thinking and throw up new insights and solutions which we can use to help improve the situation of some of our communities’ most disadvantaged households. I urge people to get involved in the week and contribute to the debate. ”

Details of the week and its itinerary will be shared during the summer.
