A new patisserie in York has opened – and the carefully crafted cakes are a delight for all senses.
Shutishuti Patisserie, on Fairfax Corner on Fairfax Street, is a micro bakery serving up a treat for both the eyes and the tastebuds.
There are elegantly beautiful tarts, pastries and cakes.
YorkMix caught up with owner and chef Eszter Takacs to find out more about how the first few weeks of opening have gone.
‘Shuti’ is the Hungarian word for cake and chef Eszter, who’s originally from Hungary, said that a lot of her recipes are inspired by her background. “But I also adapt to what I see people want to taste and enjoy.
“I’m so interested in using foraged ingredients – and not just the most obvious ones.
“We opened within the cherry blossom season, and cherry blossoms are also an edible ingredient so we have that on the menu paired with rhubarb.”

After trading with the name Shutishuti Patisserie in York for around eight years, and specialising in birthday and wedding cakes, catering, and local markets, “this is the first time I actually have a permanent location.”
Though Shutishuti Patisserie is primarily a cake shop, they also serve up some savoury bites too “so people can come at lunchtime as well.

“We have sweet and savoury, and tea and coffee – we have very good coffee from a local coffee roaster Harmony Coffee and we source very good, high quality loose leaf teas.”
The reaction so far has been “absolutely great. I love this neighbourhood, everyone is really friendly.
“It’s a residential neighbourhood, but I was always really keen to be somewhere green and to get local residents to see what I do.”
The menu “changes a lot” but Eszter said that “people really like the pretty tarts. They notice the care and attention that’s been put into their tarts or any of the cakes.

“But also people just enjoy a simple cake, and definitely the savoury things too.”
Inside, the interior is warm and welcoming with about 12 seats and everything on the menu is available for takeaway. The menu also includes many vegan and gluten free options.
Everything is made on-site, so you can see Eszter work her magic in the kitchen, along with her team member Paul. “This space is tiny – the kitchen is about two square metres – so it has some limitations.
“It would be nice to have a little bigger space but I also really enjoy this location. I would just really like this to work and to have lots of customers enjoying it.”
Shutishuti Patisserie is open from Thursday to Saturdays, 10am to 4pm. To find out more and to stay up to date with the micro bakery, visit their website and Instagram pages.
