‘Iconic’ York nightspot to close – as plans for new venue revealed

A York city centre nightspot announced its imminent closure this evening (Wednesday).

Kuda on Clifford Street has posted this message on its social channels: “Sad news. We are closing.

“Thank you to everyone that’s danced with us over the years, your support means the world! We hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have.”

But that is not the end of the story. Because the company that runs Kuda says they are planning to replace it with “a next-generation clubbing experience for the city”.

Kuda will stay open for another ten days then say goodbye with a closing party on Saturday 29 March.

It will be its last night after 13 years, and you can join in by buying tickets here.

But NEOS Hospitality, which runs Kuda, says it is to undergo an “exciting transformation” as they invest a six figure sum to create something new.

Russell Quelch, chief executive at NEOS Hospitality, said: “Kuda has been an iconic part of York’s nightlife, and we’re excited to soon be giving it a fresh new chapter.

“With the venue set to undergo a six-figure investment, we’ll be refreshing and uplifting the space, creating a next-generation clubbing experience for the city.

“Our final farewell event at Kuda on Saturday, 29 March will be a huge celebration, marking the end of an era before we begin the transformation.

“We can’t wait to unveil what’s next and welcome guests to an exciting new late-night destination in York. Watch this space…”

Kuda, previously called the Gallery, very nearly closed for good after the lockdowns. In December owner The Deltic Group went into administration, and the Clifford Street club said it was shut for good.

The building itself, which is also home to the York Dungeon, was bought by York developers Grantside and North Star. They appointed Rekom as Kuda’s operator on a ten-year-lease, and it reopened in July 2021.

Last year Rekom split from its Danish owner and rebranded as NEOS Hospitality.

More recently Kuda has been home to the hugely popular Day Club events, where people can enjoy a proper rave – but still be in bed at a reasonable hour.
