Are North Yorkshire taxi fares too much, too little, or just about right?

Residents are being asked for their views in a six week consultation.

North Yorkshire Council sets the maximum fares for taxis and aims to strike a balance with a price that is reasonable to the customer as well as the driver.

People can complete the online consultation here. It asks questions about three different maximum taxi fares and asks people to rate them.

There are five choices ranging from ‘much too high’ to ‘much too low’:

These are the three current maximum fares mentioned in the survey:

  1. a three-mile journey during the day – £9.99
  2. a three-mile journey during the night – £14.98
  3. a three-mile journey during Christmas and New Year – £19.98.

Here’s how North Yorkshire Council compares to York, Leeds and East Riding on taxi fares.

The fares are the maximum a driver can charge. They can charge a lower fare if they want to.

These fares are not applicable to private hire vehicles, which are booked in advance. The operator sets these fares rather than the licensing authority. Passengers are urged to agree the fare before travelling.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for licensing, Cllr Greg White, said: “It’s important that we strike the right balance between ensuring fares remain reasonable and affordable for passengers, while also reflecting the costs of operating a licensed vehicle so drivers are fairly rewarded.

“We encourage residents, drivers, and other stakeholders to share their views on the current maximum taxi fares across North Yorkshire before the end of July.”
