Katie Rough’s family prepare to tackle the Three Peaks to raise cash in her memory

Katie Rough’s family  have decided to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks in April 2023 in honour of her legacy.

Katie was killed by a teenager in 2017 in the Woodthorpe area of the city

Her sister, Bethany, told YorkMix Radio that their chosen charity to raise funds for is “CALM – Campaign Against Living Miserably”

It aims to show life is always worth living.

125 lives are lost every week to suicide. 75% of all UK suicides are male. It says it exists to change this by provoking conversation, running life-saving services, and bringing people together so they reject living miserably, get help when they need it and don’t die by suicide.

It’s one of a number of ways the family have tried to help others in memory of the 7-year-old who would have celebrated her 14th birthday today (Monday 16 January)

Bethany Rough says they have chosen the Three Peaks because it’s a huge challenger for #TeamRough and walking is very good for mental health. It has helped the family cope with the tragedy of Katie’s death.

They are busy training at the moment getting in the extra steps needed to prepare for April.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge takes on the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent (694 metres), Whernside (736 metres) and Ingleborough (723 metres), usually in this order, and in under 12 hours.

These hills form part of the Pennine range, and encircle the head of the valley of the River Ribble, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
