Voters wanted ‘real, transformative change’ – Keir Mather

Here are some extracts from Keir Mather’s acceptance speech after he won the newly formed Selby seat.

“Today marks almost a year since the Selby by election, which to some people feels like five minutes, to other people 1,000 years, I’m sure.

“But it was a moment when local people made history, overturning what was then the largest majority in a by-election since the Second World War, and sending me to Parliament to deliver the fresh start that our community deserved.

“I worked tirelessly to deliver, but people also knew that real, transformative change was only possible if we had a Labour government that was on our side.

“Now, at this election, people didn’t just hope for that change, they voted for it, and they’ve now granted us the opportunity and the responsibility to rebuild our country and restore faith in our politics.”

He also acknowledged the change in the boundaries of the constituency.

“My promise is to be an active, visible and hardworking local MP for our entire constituency.

“That is especially true for everyone who lives in Kippax, Methley, Allerton Bywater and Micklefield, who form the new and very welcome West Yorkshire part of our new constituency.

“You deserve an equal voice in this new constituency and a strong voice in a Labor government, and I will fight to make sure that you get both and ensure that your area is never taken for granted again.”

‘I’ve been sent to the House of Commons – thanks to my wonderful York teachers’

As he was elected to be York Outer’s new MP Luke Charters thanked everyone who voted for him, and promised to repay their trust.

The Labour campaigner took the seat from Julian Sturdy, who had held it for the Conservatives since it was established in 2010.

Mr Charters said: “I’m grateful for each and every vote, every person who puts across in that Labour box of their trust in me.

“There will be many people who voted Labour, even for the first time, and I’ll do everything I can to fight for you, and to you in particular, I say thank you.

“I promise to repay the trust you’ve put in me. But I’m standing here today as a testament to what a Labour government can do. Many of you will know I was a student at Huntington School and now have been sent to the House of Commons, thanks to the wonderful teachers I had there.”

He paid tribute to the outgoing Conservative MP Julian Sturdy. “I want to thank all of the candidates for a good race. You’ve fought on the issues you cared about. And to Julian, you’ve given many years of service to York Outer. So thank you.”

And he concluded: “It’s time to end the chaos and dysfunction in Westminster and start to rebuild that country together.

“I am dedicated to service for the people of York Outer, and I’ll be working every single day to repay the trust you placed in me. Today, we turned a page. Today, the change begins. Thank you.”

Sir Keir Starmer will be the UK’s next prime minister after Rishi Sunak admitted defeat in the face of a Labour landslide.

In his acceptance speech after retaining his Richmond and Northallerton seat, Mr Sunak said: “The Labour Party has won this General Election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory.”

Mr Sunak added: “Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides.

“And it’s something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future.

“The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight, there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss. To the many good, hard-working Conservative candidates who lost tonight, despite their tireless efforts, their local records and delivery, and their dedication to their communities. I am sorry.”
